The manufacture by hand of religious items in olivewood is an old tradition, believed to date back to the time of the Crusades. Artists coming from Europe settled in Bethlehem and taught local craftsmen the trade, which gradually also spread to the nearby villages of Beit Jala and Beit Sahour.
